On a recent visit to Southern Maryland, Lt. Governor Candidate on the Bob Ehrlich ticket, Mary Kane took time out of her busy schedule to meet with Baynet Radio and TheBAYNET.com to introduce her candidacy and the campaign to be Marylandโs next Lt. Governor for former Gov. Bob Ehrlich.
Kane is not new to politics, having run forย County Council in Montgomery County in 2000 and for Marylandโs House of Delegates in 2002. While governor, Ehrlich appointed her to the Secretary of State position. After leaving office, Kane worked as Assistant Stateโs Attorney and currently has a position with the US Chamber of Commerce. โI have taken a leave of absence from the US Chamber in order toย win this election,โ said Kane.
When asked about her duties should she and Ehrlich be successful and win, Kane stated, โIโll be working on business andย economic development for Maryland and concentrating on certain issues of the Criminal Justice system.โ She explained that while working in the Stateโs Attorneyโs office, her area of concentration was in the area of Juvenile Justice.
โThere are so many kids in the system and it so hard to get them out once they are in, Iโd like to see what we can do there to help break the cycle,โ said Kane.
Kane stated that she and her running mate feel strongly about the need to improve the stateโs environment and treatment of businesses. โWe have to change the tone of state regulations so that businesses arenโt leaving Maryland. We have to get out and support small businesses that are not being supported at this time,โ said Kane.
โBusinesses are encumbered by so many onerous regulations and that has to change,โ said the candidate. โWe used to work with businesses but now seem to be doing the opposite. We need businesses to come to Maryland, not to Virginia.โ
Kane said that she and Ehrlich intend to start that effort the day they are sworn into office. She also recognizes the need for state regulators to support farmers and those who earn their livings from the Chesapeake Bay. โIt is a balancing act that has to look out for farmers, our natural resources and the bay while working to increasing business opportunities here.โ
โWe are also going to continue our work with the military,โ said Kane. She went on to state that Ehrlich worked on the Base Realignment and Closure team and with the Pentagon, knowing back then, while in Congress, that the BRAC decisions would affect Marylandโs future for years to come. โThatโs the kind of foresight he has and we intend to run Maryland that way, with foresight understand the ramifications of our actions and how they will affect Maryland for years to come,โ said Kane.
As Lt. Governor, Kane stated that she intends to work tirelessly to ensure every family in Maryland is afforded an unlimited opportunity to pursue their dreams. โThat begins with revitalizing Marylandโs stagnant economy, lowering the tax burden on families and small businesses, and making government accountable to the citizens it represents.
