WALDORF, Md. – Riding a four-game losing streak and fresh off back-to-back rainouts, Southern Maryland returned with a vengeance in Saturday’s doubleheader. Timely offense and dominant pitching led the Blue Crabs to split a twinbill with the Lancaster Barnstormers, winning game one 3-0, and dropping game two 3-1.

Southern Maryland’s game one starter, Mike Devine, tossed a gem. Devine set down ten Barnstormers batters on strikes. It was smooth sailing for the Pennsylvania native after an early struggle, shutting out the Stomers in six and one-thirds innings.

The Blue Crabs bats caught fire in the bottom of the third inning. Michael Baca’s one out double brought up Dario Pizzano, who drove in the first run of the game. David Harris, in his first game this season in the cleanup spot, kept the scoring going with a two-run monster homer, giving the Blue Crabs a 3-0 lead. The early lead held through the contest, giving way to Mat Latos (S, 2) who shut the door on the Stormers.

Brandon Barker was brilliant for the Blue Crabs in game two. The starting pitcher tossed five and one-thirds innings, striking out six while allowing one run.

Southern Maryland’s only run of the game came in the bottom of the second inning on an Alex Crosby line drive double to center field, scoring Joe DeLuca.

The Barnstormers bats came to life in the sixth inning of game two when Anthony Peroni hit a solo homer. The Stormers added on another pair in the seventh inning, securing the game two victory by a score of 3-1.

In front of a packed Regency Furniture Stadium, the Blue Crabs sent Crustacean Nation home with a desperately needed win in game one and a thriller in game two, improving to a 4-10 record on the young 2021 season.
