ย At 12:26 a.m. Feb. 23, Charles County Sheriffโ€™s Deputy W. Saunders conducted a traffic stop on a Pontiac sport-utility vehicle on Crain Highway near Popes Creek Road in Newburg.

ย Once the vehicle stopped, the driver and passenger exited and fled on foot. Officer Saunders pursued the suspects on foot.

ย One of the suspects, Shaun Robert McMahon, 29, of Waldorf, returned to the vehicle and drove away. Officer D. Behm, saw the vehicle shortly thereafter on Edge Hill Road. He stopped it and arrested McMahon.

ย Officers searching the area for the other suspect, Steven Wayne Sams, Jr., 28, of Waldorf, who was wanted, found him walking on Route 301 about a mile south of the initial traffic stop. He was arrested without further incident.

ย After further investigation, Sams was charged with driving while intoxicated, driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license, driving with a revoked license, speeding, negligent driving, reckless driving, fleeing and eluding and a warrant for failure to appear in court. McMahon was charged with fleeing and eluding and driving in a manner to cause wheel spinning.
