ย The drought is over! Southern Marylandโs Blue Crabs baseball team will play its first game at 7:05 p.m on Friday, May 2, in the new Regency stadium. The ballpark is located in Waldorf – St. Charles just south of Billingsley Road, the new East/West highway connecting US Route 301 and MD Route 5.
ย However, for the ultimate baseball enthusiast, the 2008 Major League season kicked off a week early. On March 25 and 26, the season started with two games in Tokyo between world champions the Boston Red Sox and playoff contenders, the Oakland Aโs. You would have had to been a die-hard fan to get up at 5 in the morning to watch those games, but I did just that!
ย Why? Because I absolutely love baseball, thatโs why.
ย For my money there is no higher drama than a close game in the bottom of the ninth inning: the clean-up hitter is at the plate facing the opponentโs vaunted closer.ย There is a man on base in scoring position and the game comes down to the last pitch. There are 2 outs and the count stands at 3 balls and 2 strikes. This one last pitch will either win or lose the game. There is nothing like this in all of sports.
ย Baseball is incredible! There are no clocks, no instant replays, no time limits, nothing but individuals playing as a team. In baseball, it is always one individual batter against a pitcher with his team defense on the field. The game of baseball is more than just entertainment; it is a pastime. Played by children and adults alike โ baseball is truly a game for everyone.
ย Whatโs even better, professional baseball is coming right here to Southern Maryland.
ย Blue Crab season tickets are still available from as low as to $95 for a ten game package to a high of $595 for all 70 games. Soon, single game tickets will be on sale. For more details and tickets, go to www.somdbluecrabs.com.
ย I for one, can hardly wait for that very first pitch! The games will be affordable, easy to get to and fun for all. Imagine the smell of peanuts and hotdogs, the heat of the summer, the crack of the bat and the thrill of that last inning drama right in front of you.ย Life is good!
