CHESAPEAKE BEACH, Md. — Calvert County Sheriff Ricky Cox and town officials honored Chesapeake Beach resident Mark Hewlett during the Sept. 18 Town Council meeting, recognizing him as a “Neighborhood Hero” for what they described as an extraordinary act of courage.

On Sunday, Aug. 3, 2025, Mark, who is nonverbal and lives with Angelman Syndrome, rushed to help his longtime caregiver, Cheryl Emery, after she fell in her driveway and was unable to get up. During the meeting, officials said Mark not only went into the home to alert Cheryl’s sister, but also spoke the word “help” — a rare and unexpected moment of verbalization that she described as nothing short of miraculous.

“Mark’s quick response and steadfast presence are a true example of courage and selflessness,” Cox said. “He acted without hesitation, showing sound judgment and unwavering compassion. His actions ensured Cheryl’s safety and reminded all of us what community and heroism really mean.”

Mayor Bruce Wahl read aloud the inscription on Mark’s award: “Neighborhood Hero Award, proudly presented to Mark. Awarded to a resident who stepped up in a moment of need, showing courage, compassion, and quick thinking to help others. Their actions reflect the spirit of community that makes our town strong.”

Bruce also shared a reflection as part of his report, quoting author Jon J. Muth: “It is easy to believe we are each waves and forget we are also the ocean.” He said Mark’s actions embodied that spirit, showing how love and care within a community can inspire remarkable moments.

On social media, residents echoed that sentiment, calling Mark “Calvert County’s Superman,” “a true hero,” and “an amazing young man.” Others, including a former camp leader and school program colleagues, said his instinct to help fit perfectly with the generosity they had always seen in him.

“Love this! Proud of you, Mark! You are a hero,” one commenter wrote. Another added: “Mark is truly a beautiful person… his actions prove that true heroes walk among us.”

North Beach Volunteer Fire Department also honored Mark by bringing a firetruck and ice cream – two of Mark’s favorite things!
