UPDATE Sept. 23

On Sept. 21 at 3:50 p.m., officers responded to the area of Hawthorne Road west of Mitchell Road in La Plata for the report of a crash involving three vehicles and a school bus. A preliminary investigation showed the driver of a Dodge Dakota was traveling west on Hawthorne Road when he lost control of his truck, crossed the center lines and struck a Ford pick-up truck and a Jeep which were in the east bound lanes. A school bus traveling directly behind the Jeep struck the Jeep after it was disabled from the initial impact. The driver of the Dodge โ€“ a 16-year-old male – was flown to a hospital with serious injuries. Three students on the bus were transported to Charles Regional Medical Center as a precaution. None of the other drivers were injured. Master Cpl. J. Hopkins is investigating.


UPDATE Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 8 p.m.

La Plata, MD – Police in Charles County are investigating a multi-vehicle crash which occurred Monday afternoon, Sept. 21 on Hawthorne Road. One of the vehicles involved was a school bus. The five occupants of the bus, including three children, were not seriously injured. The children were taken to University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center as a precaution.

The latest reports from sources stated a Dodge Dakota driven by an unidentified 16-year-old was traveling westbound on Hawthorne Road when the driver lost control, crossed the center line, striking a Ford F-250 and a Jeep. The Jeep went into a spin and hit the bus. According to sources, the driver of the Dodge sustained a serious head injury and was flown to a Washington, DC area hospital.

Hawthorne Road betweenย Adams Road and Bibury Lane was closed to traffic for about one hour.

The Charles County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash and will have an updated report later.


Advisory Update 5:48 p.m.

Charles County officials have announced that all portions of Hawthorne Road have been reopened.


ADVISORY UPDATE 5 p.m.

Charles County, MD – The Charles County Sheriff’s Office reported a three-vehicle collision on Hawthorne Road. The crash occurred Monday, Sept. 21 sometime after 4 p.m.ย 

One of the vehicles involved was a school bus. Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Diane Richardson told The BayNet that all of the students on the bus are OK. However, the students are being transported to a local hospital as a precaution. All of the students’ parents have been notified.

The driver of one of the other involved vehicles–a truck–sustained head injuries in the crash and is being flown to a Washington, DC-area hospital.

The crash remains under investigation. Motorists should avoid Hawthorne Road between Adams Road and Bilbury Lane until further notice.


ADVISORY – Charles County authorities advised Monday, Sept. 21 at 4:33 p.m. that Hawthorne Road is closed between Adams Road and Bibury Lane due to an auto accident. Charles County Sheriff Office is on the scene handling the incident.ย  Please avoid the area if at all possible.
