LA PLATA, Md. — Extreme heat continues to bear down on the Mid-Atlantic, with high temperatures and suffocating humidity prompting the National Weather Service to issue widespread alerts on Monday, June 23, 2025.
An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect through 9 p.m. this evening, with heat index values expected to reach up to 110 degrees across much of Maryland, the District of Columbia, and parts of Virginia. Temperatures are climbing into the upper 90s, and humidity levels are pushing conditions into dangerous territory.
The warning, issued early Monday morning, covers a broad area including central, north central, northeast, northern, and southern Maryland, as well as central and northern Virginia. Another warning is already scheduled for Tuesday, June 24, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., as forecasters expect the oppressive weather to persist.
Heat-related illnesses are a major concern during this stretch of extreme conditions.
Southern Maryland opened cooling centers as temperatures soared, offering temporary relief for residents without air conditioning. Local agencies are urging residents to stay indoors, drink plenty of fluids, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity, especially during peak afternoon hours.
Cooling centers remain open throughout the region as officials monitor the ongoing threat. With the heat dome showing little sign of movement, forecasters say elevated temperatures could linger well into the week.

We are getting HOT WEATHER with an additional side of HEAT, and HELL type temperatures 🌡 😳…and just so you know how hot it is, stick a cast iron skillet 🍳 outside on the pavement. Leve it for one hour, and then break an egg it it…or make it two eggs 🥚. You’ll have lunch fried up real good within seconds. We have done it every year, atleast 3 or four times. It works great each time.
