An Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team is conducting a blow in place around 3:30 p.m. today at Fisherman’s Point on the naval air station for ordnance that was uncovered Nov. 13 near building 142, Air Test and Evaluation Squadron (VX) 23.
Citizens residing on Solomons and in neighborhoods surrounding the naval air station, to include on-base housing residents, may hear the blast from today’s blow in place and are asked not to be alarmed.
Air station staff and the EOD team are implementing precautionary measures to ensure remnants from the ordnance and the C4 explosives used today are contained to the naval air station. Some of those efforts include an hour of “no flight time” and keeping civilian vessels in the Patuxent River a safe distance from the blow in place site.
The unexploded ordnance was discovered by contractors while they were planting trees near the VX 23 compound. Upon discovery, an EOD team from Naval Support Activity South Potomac, Va., was called in but unable to determine if the device was or was not inert due to heavy corrosion.
