A local man has been charged with assault, destruction of property and disorderly conduct after going berserk Thursday inside a California liquor store.

As of this Sunday report, The Bay Net has not yet been able to confirm the name of the man photographed and arrested.

Police however were able to confirm the man they arrested using several witness accounts and surveillance footage from inside Jughead Liquors, which is located in the Kmart plaza.

St. Mary’s Sheriff Information Officer Sgt. Steve Hall told The Bay Net the suspect became enraged after the female behind the counter asked him for identification during a purchase, shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday.

The suspect protested to the point that the clerk pulled out a baseball bat and demanded he immediately leave. The suspect grabbed the bat from the woman and began bashing things in the store, Sgt. Hall said.

During the altercation, Hall said the suspect threw a tray of lighters, hitting the woman, which warrants the assault charge.

The suspect walked out the store, and the woman, who was on the phone with police, watched him enter a vehicle. Officers intercepted the vehicle while it was still in the parking lot.

There were other customers in the store at the time. Sgt. Hall, who was on the scene, said the store was a complete mess.
