GREAT MILLS, Md. — A 16-year-old student was taken into custody Friday after another student was confronted with a knife inside a restroom at Great Mills High School.

Deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to the school on June 5, 2026, after a report that a student had been threatened by another student.

According to a preliminary investigation, the victim was confronted by the suspect, who was armed with a knife. The victim was able to leave the area and notify a member of the school’s administration.

The suspect was located and detained, and deputies recovered a fixed-blade knife.

No injuries were reported.

The sheriff’s office said the suspect is being charged as an adult with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, attempted armed robbery and possession of a weapon on school property.

The juvenile was not publicly identified by law enforcement because of legal protections.

Great Mills High School officials said the incident was reported around 1 p.m. and that the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation. School administration and safety and security personnel are cooperating with investigators.

Families of Great Mills High School students were sent a letter by Principal Dothard informing them of the incident and outlining support available for students.

The sheriff’s office said it takes all threats involving school safety seriously and continues to work with St. Mary’s County Public Schools to maintain a safe learning environment.
