Though located in southern Anne Arundel County, Jug Bay is conveniently situated near Southern Maryland, making it an easy drive from Calvert, St. Mary’s and Charles counties. Even communities farther south, like Solomons and Leonardtown, are within about an hour’s drive.

This makes Jug Bay the perfect location to meet up with friends from all over Maryland to get outside and explore the unique wildlife and habitats Southern Maryland has to offer.

Make sure you stop by the visitor center when you get to the sanctuary. There is a fee to enter, and you’ll need to sign in before hitting the trails. It’s also a good place to start if you haven’t been there before so you can learn about the sanctuary and the different trails. There’s also lots of information about the sanctuary, so if you take a minute to explore, you’ll give yourself a leg up on what to expect on the trails. The bathrooms are in here, too.

Outside of the visitor center, you’ll see picnic tables and a nature exploring center in the woods nearby. There’s also a turtle enclosure, where hopefully you’ll be lucky enough to see the turtles enjoying their plates of fruit and blended carrots.

Jug Bay Hiking Trails

The sanctuary has multiple trails along three main loops, ranging in distance from 1.1 to 4.1 miles. The many trails give hikers the option to head in different directions and explore all points of the sanctuary along the different loops.

The longest loop is the White Loop at 4.1 miles, which includes the Upper Railroad Bed Trail, the Farm Trail, the Beach Trail and more.

The popular Otter Point Trail is on the Yellow Loop, which caps out at 2.4 miles. For the shortest hike, you can hit the Forest Trail on the Green Loop, which is altogether only 1.1 miles.

As noted on the maps in the visitor center, the fastest trail to the Jug Bay Pier is 4.4 miles round trip.

Jug Bay Views

The main observation deck near the visitor center is currently closed for construction, as is the marsh boardwalk. These are usually the best places for water views, but you can still enjoy the Marsh Trail and all the wildlife that comes with it. This trail is great for birds, especially osprey.

Jug Bay Kayaking And Canoeing

Anyone interested in exploring Jug Bay by boat can kayak or canoe in the peaceful waters. Boaters can launch from the Prince George’s County side of the sanctuary, from Jackson Landing or Selby Landing. Paddlers are advised to watch the tides, as low tide can leave you stranded in the mud. The sanctuary also does not have kayak or canoe rentals, so you have to provide your own.

In addition to daytime paddling, the sanctuary offers tours and events, as well as paddle-in campsites that can be booked online for those who want a more secluded experience in the sanctuary.

Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary is open Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Make sure to check the website for the most up-to-date hours, as they can change in the winter.
