Hunterโs grandfather, Rocky Russell, took this opportunity to make a huge donation himself.
In May of 2002, Russell bought his first motorcycle, a โ95 Harley Davidson Softail. Days later, he fell 30 feet from a roof he was working on, breaking his back. Doctors said he may not be able to walk again and that he definitely would not be able to ride a motorcycle. With hard work and determination, he proved them wrong. He let his hair grow long and rides his motorcycle every chance he gets.
When his grandson, Hunter, was born in 2003, he declared he was passing down his first bike to his first grandson. Now that Hunter has been diagnosed with brain cancer, Rocky raised an additional $5,000 from supporters by cutting off his hair. Rocky also made the decision to donate his hair to โLocks of Love,โ a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.
Hunter, a sweet and precocious four-year-old boy, recently underwent extensive brain surgery to remove a massive tumor that was encasing his brain and is faced with months of chemotherapy to eradicate the cancer.
During Hunter’s chemotherapy, he will likely lose his hair. Toby’s Barbershop, located at 21927 North Coral Drive in Lexington Park, hosted the event “Haircut for Hunter,” so that the community could show its support for Hunter by cutting their hair.
Nina Guy, the owner of Toby’s Barbershop, and her staff generously donated their time and profession to make the day possible. All proceeds from haircuts went directly to the Hunter Dean Scott Foundation.
On Saturday, Aug. 9, there will be a Poker Run to raise money for Hunterโs family. Hunterโs Dad, Eric, will be riding Hunterโs 95 Softail right along side of Rocky riding his own motorcycle. Dad and Granddad together riding for Hunter.
If you would like to help but were unable to attend the benefit, donations can be made to the Hunter Dean Scott Foundation at the PNC Bank in Solomons, or mailed to P.O. Box 289, Solomons, MD 20688.
The foundation is set up so that you may use a donation as a tax deduction. Additionally, individuals and businesses will be acknowledged via a โThank Youโ ad in the local newspapers.
