Due to the high winds today, all athletic practices for Charles County Public Schools are canceled.

Three Charles County Schools were forced to close because they had no power. They are Lackey High School, Henson Middle School and Malcolm Elementary School.

In addition,ย today Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO)ย is working to restore power to Southern Marylanders affected by the storm. At 9 a.m. about 870ย Southern Marylandersย were without power as rain and high winds that caused outages throughout region, bringing down trees and power lines.ย 

Damage from the storm is concentrated in Charles County and southern Prince Georgeโ€™s County, whereย SMECO estimatesย 780 customers were without power as of 8 a.m., this morning.According to SMECOย approximately 85 customers in Calvert and St. Maryโ€™s counties were also without power at 8 a.m.

Scattered outages are expected throughout the day Monday as wind speeds increase and the rain continues.

To report outages and downed power lines, SMECO customers may call 1-888-440-3311.ย  Please remember downed power lines are dangerous.ย  People should stay away from downed lines and anything that may be touching a power line.ย  If possible, use flashlights during an outage, not candles, because candles may cause fires.
