Baby Osprey Takes First Flight From Nest In North Beach

NORTH BEACH, Md. — Osprey fans and towns all over the Chesapeake Bay are celebrating good news this week as North Beach’s baby osprey successfully took its first flight.

According to a Facebook post by the Town of North Beach, the baby osprey took off from the nest on Monday, July 20, at 6:44 a.m. “with mom and dad circling overhead in encouragement.” The flight was captured on the livestream that monitors the nest 24/7.

The first flight marks an important step in the baby’s journey toward independence and the future. Fledglings typically stay with their parents in the nest for 30 to 60 days after their first flight, remaining in the breeding area as they learn to fish on their own. The young osprey will most likely depart on its own for the autumn migration.

The Chesapeake Bay supports the largest concentration of breeding ospreys in the world. Ospreys are monogamous and often mate with the same partner for life. Eight to 10 thousand breeding pairs nest in the Chesapeake region each year, or about one-quarter of the whole osprey population.

Breeding pairs have been known to return to the same nest site year after year, which is the case in North Beach and with several other osprey nests in Calvert County.

Ospreys return to their nests in late February or early March, and babies hatch in late May or early June. There are about 100,000 birds worldwide, and though ospreys are not endangered, they face several environmental challenges that have made them the subject of conservation efforts over the years, especially in the Chesapeake Beach area.
