WALDORF, Md. — A Waldorf man has been charged with first- and second-degree assault following a domestic incident in which a knife was reportedly displayed, according to court records.

Charging documents identify the suspect as Julius Novil Day, 44. He faces one felony count of first-degree assault and one misdemeanor count of second-degree assault tied to an Oct. 4, 2025, incident in the Sheffield neighborhood.

Police responded at about 8:45 p.m. to a report of a domestic assault “with a weapon” involving individuals who share a household and children.

According to the report, Day told an officer that an argument occurred in the kitchen, during which he was spit on, and he pushed the other party, picked up a kitchen knife and told them to back away.

The report states that the other individual told police Day turned toward them while holding the knife, prompting them to step back. No injuries were reported. The knife was reportedly returned to a kitchen block after the individuals separated.

A court commissioner signed the charging papers earlier this month. Records show Day was released on his own recognizance on Oct. 5.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, in Charles District Court.

Under Maryland law, first-degree assault carries a maximum penalty of up to 25 years in prison; second-degree assault carries up to 10 years and/or a $2,500 fine upon conviction.
