CLEMENTS, Md. — With oyster season quickly approaching, the 7th District Optimist Club is gearing up for the 45th anniversary of the Blessing of the Fleet celebration on Oct. 1 and 2 at Colton’s Point.

With the gates opening at 11 a.m. on both days, the weekend festivities combine a celebration of heritage and family fun.  

The Maryland Dove will be on site for tours, and taxi boats will give rides to St. Clement’s Island for a tour of the reconstructed Blackistone Lighthouse and the Cross. Admission to the St. Clement’s Island Museum is free during the event weekend.

The main stage will host a variety of acts, including Richard Wagner, Billy Hill’s True Blue Country Band, Drivin’ Muzzy, The DRZ Band, Six Gun South, Only 4 Tonight Band, The John Lucky Band, and HydraFX.

Local wine and beer stands to be included at the event feature businesses like Still Creek Vineyards, Port of Leonardtown and Slack Winery.

There will be plenty of activities for the young and young-at-heart, featuring a Kiddie Tractor Pull, moon bounces and slides, Balloon Nerd Fun with Brian Garner and Face Painting with Margaret Laduca. If you’re an animal lover, there will be plenty of animals on display and free pony rides are to be provided by Crazy Critters 4-H club. There will also be a train ride-around, a rock climbing wall and Foundation 4 Heroes will be on site so children can meet superheroes such as Spiderman and Batman.

The Kids Stage will include performances by artists and groups such as The Chris Campbell Show, Blue Sky Puppet Theatre and Balloon Nerd Magic.

Crafts master Mary Sasscer will man the Crafter’s Tent selling handmade artisan work. Wings Over Washington and Dr. Richard Mervin will be at the Kite Crafters Area will be available to make, display and fly kites.
