Waldorf, MD – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (15-17) won game two of their four-game set at home against the Lancaster Barnstormers (18-14) 5-2, behind a great effort from Pat McCoy (1-1) on the mound.

The Blue Crabs jumped on Lancaster’s starter Bryan Evans (1-2), putting up four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Evans, who was facing the Blue Crabs for a third consecutive outing, got the first two batters, before Michael Snyder reached on a double down the third base line. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Devon Rodriguez, who singled in Snyder and Wilson. Zach Cone followed that with a triple, scoring two more, and putting the Blue Crabs up 4-0.

McCoy sat down the first six batters he faced, before giving up a solo homerun to Trayvon Robinson to lead off the third inning. Southern Maryland responded with a run of their own in the fourth inning. Cone started the inning with a single, advancing to second on a stolen base. A single from catcher Luis Alen plated Cone, and put the Blue Crabs ahead 5-1.

An injury to the home plate umpire caused a brief delay in the bottom of the fifth, before McCoy headed back out for his sixth inning of work. A lead-off single from Darian Sandford got the action started in the inning. Caleb Gindl followed with a double down the right field line, and a throwing error from Jose Lozada allowed Sandford to score. After walking the next batter, McCoy collected a strikeout and a 6-3 double play to work himself out of the jam, leaving with a 5-2 lead.

“I felt a little tight coming back out after the delay, so I knew that sixth inning was going to be a battle for me,” said McCoy. “I’m just glad I was able to work myself out of the jam, and put my team in a position to win the ballgame tonight.”

The bullpens took over after the sixth for both sides, trading scoreless innings. Lancaster collected the only hit over the last three innings of action, when Robinson doubled off Britt Robertshaw with one out. Robertshaw was able to strand Robinson at third, and hold the lead at 5-2.

Cody Eppley (S,9) was tasked with locking down the ninth inning, against the 4-5-6 hitters in the Barnstormers lineup. Eppley sat them down in order, collecting his ninth save of the season, and securing the Blue Crabs a 2-0 lead in the series. The win moved Southern Maryland to 15-17 on the season, and cut their deficit on the Barnstormers to just three games in the Freedom Division.
The Blue Crabs return to action Wednesday, May 24th for game three of the four game series against the Barnstormers. Southern Maryland will send RHP Daryl Thompson (2-2, 4.25 ERA) to the mound, as he will try to secure the series win.
