Bowie Woman Admits To Second-Degree Murder In Fatal 2023 D.C. Shooting

WASHINGTON — A Bowie, Maryland, woman and a Washington, D.C., man have pleaded guilty in connection with a daylight shooting that killed a man on a Northwest Washington sidewalk in the summer of 2023, federal prosecutors said.

Iesha Marks, 31, admitted last week to second-degree murder while armed in the July 30, 2023, killing of 46-year-old Donald Childs. Daniel Bangura, 22, of Washington, pleaded guilty in the same case to obstruction of justice, according to an announcement from U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.

Marks entered her plea on Jan. 13, 2026, and faces a potential sentence ranging from 13 to 25 years in prison, followed by a term of supervised release. Bangura, who also pleaded guilty on Jan. 13, is facing between four and eight years behind bars, also followed by supervised release. Both plea agreements remain subject to approval by the court at sentencing.

The Honorable Danya A. Dayson is scheduled to sentence Bangura on March 13, 2026, while Marks is set to be sentenced on June 12, 2026.

Prosecutors said the shooting occurred shortly before 3 p.m. as traffic and pedestrians moved through the 100 block of Farragut Street, NW. Bangura was driving through the area when Marks, seated in the front passenger seat, leaned out of the vehicle window and fired several shots into the street. One of the bullets struck Childs, who was standing on the sidewalk, killing him, authorities said.

After the shooting, Bangura drove away from the scene and later transported Marks to Pennsylvania, where investigators say the firearm used in the killing was disposed of in an effort to avoid detection.

Marks was arrested in October 2023 and has remained in custody since that time. Bangura was taken into custody following his indictment in May 2025.

Interim Metropolitan Police Chief Jeffery W. Carroll joined federal prosecutors in announcing the guilty pleas. The investigation was conducted by officers and detectives with the Metropolitan Police Department.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Yasmin Emrani is handling the prosecution of the case.
