SOUTHERN MARYLAND – In our tri-county area, there exists a group of community members who face significant challenges when it comes to accessing the healthcare they need. These are our elder residents, particularly those aged 65 and older, who live alone and find traveling for doctor’s visits or hospital tests inconvenient and often unmanageable. Recognizing this pressing need, Stephanie Shepard, MPA, PA-C, a dedicated physician’s assistant specializing in geriatric care, has launched Southern Maryland House Calls (SMHC), an invaluable service designed to bring medical care directly into the homes of these seniors.

For many elderly individuals in our area, the physical and logistical challenges of traditional medical care can lead to delayed or missed appointments, potentially worsening their conditions. This is where SMHC steps in to fill a critical gap. Stephanie Shepard and her team are committed to ensuring that our community’s seniors receive the timely and comprehensive care they need right where they are most comfortable—at home.

This initiative is more than just a convenience; it’s a lifeline for patients and their families. The ability of a medical professional to visit a patient’s home not only alleviates the stress associated with travel but also provides a unique opportunity for healthcare providers to assess living conditions and tailor their care to the specific environments of their patients. Services offered by SMHC include routine chronic care management, urgent sick visits, and an array of diagnostic tests such as lab work, EKGs, echocardiograms, ultrasounds, and X-rays, all performed in the patient’s home.

Moreover, Stephanie’s holistic approach extends to coordinating with local specialists and hospitals, providing referrals to physical and occupational therapy, skilled nursing, and even hospice care as needed. This comprehensive model of care ensures that every aspect of the patient’s health is being attended to, with the added benefit of personal, one-on-one attention.

The impact of such services cannot be overstated. For families, SMHC offers peace of mind knowing that their elderly loved ones are cared for medically and treated with the compassion and respect they deserve. It allows families to be partners in care rather than mere coordinators, and it reassures them that the health and well-being of their loved ones are in capable hands.

Stephanie Shepard, with over 18 years of medical experience, particularly in geriatrics, brings not only her professional expertise but also a deep personal commitment to improving the lives of the elderly. After witnessing firsthand the challenges homebound seniors face, she has dedicated herself to enhancing their quality of life through personalized, in-home care.

Her dedication extends beyond her professional life; as a resident of Southern Maryland, Stephanie enjoys being an active part of the community, engaging in outdoor activities with her dogs, Bodhi and Byrdock, on the Patuxent River.

As Southern Maryland House Calls begins its journey, it stands as a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of compassionate community care. For our elderly residents and their families, SMHC is not just a healthcare provider but a partner in ensuring that the twilight years can be lived with dignity, comfort, and the best health possible right at home.

  1. TERRIBLE CARE! She needs to be reported to the board and shut down ASAP! She practices poor medicine and is not aware of legalities surrounding elderly care!
