MECHANICSVILLE, Md. — Bystanders rescued a man from a burning vehicle Saturday night after a crash near Three Notch Road and Harpers Corner Road in Mechanicsville.
Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 9:53 p.m. July 18, 2026, for a reported motor vehicle collision involving entrapment and fire.
Police arrived to find the vehicle off the roadway and fully engulfed in flames, with the driver reportedly trapped inside.
When firefighters arrived, bystanders were working to remove the man from the vehicle. The patient was successfully pulled to safety and placed in the care of emergency medical personnel while crews extinguished the fire.
The driver, described as a man in his 30s or 40s, was initially reported to be unresponsive and may have remained inside the burning vehicle for five to six minutes.
He suffered burns to both hands and singeing around his nose, raising concern for possible airway burns. The man was alert before being transported.
Authorities confirmed he was the vehicle’s only occupant.
Maryland State Police Aviation Command Trooper 7 was requested and landed at Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department Station 2. The patient was flown to MedStar Washington Hospital Center for treatment.
Three Notch Road was temporarily shut down while emergency crews operated at the scene.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
