DUNKIRK, Md. – On Thursday, April 25th, crowds gathered to applaud 24 distinguished war veterans (aged 71-102 years old) at the Dunkirk District Park in Calvert County. It was the Capital Region Honor Flight Operation “Welcome Home” 2.0 ceremony.
Before the arrival of the veterans, families, and friends gathered around to share stories, make posters, and pass out American flags in anticipation. The flag was raised between two fire trucks – a stunning and patriotic vista in the setting sunlight.
Beginning at the Maryland/ D.C. line, a parade of vehicles drove through the streets and through the park, led by police cruisers, until the bus full of heroes hit their destination. Once parked, they were swarmed by loving embraces, loud cheering, gift giving and salutes.
These veterans served in the Vietnam War, the Korean War, and World War II. Like their brothers and sisters, they’ve made many sacrifices, highlighted by short speeches given by community leaders thanking them for their service.
Mission BBQ came out to show their appreciation and gave gift bags to the honorees. Sheriff Ricky Cox shook hands with everyone and showed his support. Commissioner Catherine Grasso attended and spoke with pride about these men and women.
This was a wonderful evening where the community came out to share in patriotism, gratitude, and honor. Thank you to all of our veterans!
The CCSO, members of the Nam Nights, the Dunkirk VFD, Calvert County EMS, Solomons Fire & Rescue, and the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office all helped set up and put on this event.
