PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — On March 1, the Board of County Commissioners hosted their Regular Meeting to discuss the needs and pressing matters of Calvert County. After completing the agenda, a surprising announcement from one of the commissioners shocked the board.
Steve Weems (R) stated that he will not be seeking re-election for a fourth term as a member of the board of commissioners, adding, “Sometimes it is best to leave the dance floor while the music is still playing.”
He added, “I want to thank the citizens of Calvert County. This doesn’t preclude me from public service in the future, but it’s time for me to take a break out of this cycle. It’s been an honor and a privilege, I know it’s cliche but I really want to thank everyone including the staff.”
Mike Hart (R) followed up on Weems’ announcement describing it as “a bombshell”. Hart said that he has known Weems since the sixth grade and that he has always been a “gentleman and a deeply caring individual.” The rest of the board chimed in saying that they have nine more months with him because he is still in office until December.
Weems was elected in 2010 as an at-large Calvert County Commissioner. He also operates Wemyss Liquors in St. Leonard, a family-owned liquor store.
“I think the county is a good place,” he said.
