The 2013 Calvert County Fair begins Wednesday, Sept. 25 and concludes Sunday, Sept. 29 with something special for U.S. Armed Forces personnel.
The event is primarily a showcase for the countyโs agriculture community, however, the business, amusements, entertainment and culinary entities also have a hand in making the event a big draw for all of Southern Maryland.
Prior to the fairโs opening, parents have been registering small children for contests, Calvert County Fair Idol hopefuls have been polishing up their vocal skills and young women have prepped for the rigorous process of selecting a Miss Tranquility to reign over the five-day festivities. Young men may also vie for the title of Lord Calvert.
โItโs a very exciting, family friendly event,โ said fair board member Larry Titus.
Among the ongoing attractions this year are Reptile Adventure, the Nervous Nocks, Grandpa Cratchet, the Aerial Stunt Spectacular, Flumpa and Friends, duck and pig races and chainsaw woodcarver Dennis Beach.
The fair will officially open Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 25 at 4 p.m. with official ceremonies at 4:30 p.m. Itโs Feed the Needy Night and attendees may enter the confines for $1 or a donation of a 14 ounce or larger can of food.
Thursday, Sept. 26 is Senior Citizens and Special Needs Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Morning entertainment includes the Calvert High School Chorus, โRocking Elvisโ and the annual Red Hat Parade.
Calvert Fairโs 25th annual Youth Day is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 27 with youth under age 18 admitted free until 4 p.m. A plethora of games is plannedโcorn hole toss, hoop-shooting, fast pitch, sack race and wheelbarrow race to name a few. Live performances by three local dance studios, demonstrations by police K-9s, karate students and skateboarders are planned.
Boys and girls bikes will be given away as part of a long-standing Youth Day tradition.
While Youth Day yields the Calvert County Fairโs largest mass of humanity, the spectacle doesnโt end there. Saturday, Sept. 28 includes the baby show, 4-H open cattle show and livestock auction (separate events- one at 9 a.m. and the other at 6 p.m.), entertainment by the BADD Company Dance Team, the Diane Herbert Dancers and the Southern Maryland Boot Scooters, the draft horse pull and appearances by Washington Redskins greats from the past. ย
