PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Changes to Calvert County’s animal regulations are likely coming soon. The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) voted at the Dec. 16 meeting to keep the record open for 10 days before adopting the changes to Chapter 7 – Animals of the Calvert County code.
Deputy Director of Animal Services April Coleman explained that the goal of this review is to align the ordinance with current animal welfare standards, strengthen accountability for pet owners and animal-related businesses, and streamline enforcement and administrative processes.
Coleman provided the same reasoning at the Aug. 5 meeting, where she presented the changes to the ordinance that include changes in licensing for animals and exemptions for fanciers, hunting dogs and others.
The ordinance hasn’t been updated since 2008 — 17 years ago. Coleman said the updates also include information and regulations for the animal shelter, which didn’t exist when the current ordinance was adopted in 2008.
Commissioner Todd Ireland said he’d received a few calls from constituents about the specifics of the ordinance, mostly pertaining to licensing. Ireland said he was able to answer the questions due to Animal Services’ comprehensive document, which included definitions, and praised it for being thorough and considerate of current needs of the county.
