PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — For the 24th year running, the Calvert County government has received the Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). The Budget and Finance Team announced the award at the Dec. 16 Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting.
Each year, the GFOA is a major professional association servicing the needs of appointed and elected local, state and provincial-level government officials and other finance practitioners. The group evaluates the county’s current fiscal year budget for how well it serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guideline and a communications device. If this document is rated at least “proficient” by the criteria within those categories, the entity receives the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award.
According to a letter to the Calvert County government from the GFOA, “This award is the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting and represents a significant achievement by your organization.”
Mary Andes, deputy director of the Department of Finance and Budget, said that earning the award was due to the many employees who work diligently every day to ensure the county maintains the highest quality in financial budgeting. She said many members of her department helped their team members with tasks outside of their own jobs and worked extra hours to help make the budget document the best possible quality.
“I’m extremely grateful,” Andes said. Deputy County Administrator Stephen McGibbon echoed this gratitude for the budget team.
BOCC President Earl Hance said in seven years, this is the best budget team the county has ever had.
“What you and your team do, the hours you put in, is incredible,” Commissioner Mark C. Cox added.
