PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert County’s interim superintendent, Dr. Marcus Newsome, laid out some of the district’s opportunities for growth during his budget presentation at the Jan. 29 Board of Education (BOE) meeting.
Dr. Newsome identified six key areas of opportunity to improve specific outcomes for students in targeted groups or learning areas. These suggestions are for Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) to consider when creating the budgets for the next fiscal year.
Those opportunities include:
- Mathematics achievement
- Students with disabilities
- Multilingual learners
- Students experiencing economic disadvantages
- Students from historically underrepresented groups
- Implementation of systemic key performance indicators (KPIs) and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
According to Dr. Newsome, these were some of the areas found lacking in the draft efficiency report being put together by Public Works LLC.
Calvert schools’ Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) scores improved in math and English language arts (ELA) last year but continued to show a drop in proficiency from seventh- to eighth-grade math.
The superintendent’s budget presentation is meant to guide the BOE in its decision-making by highlighting goals, priority areas and successes. By highlighting these places with room to grow, the hope is the BOE can intentionally allocate resources toward them and see improved outcomes next year.
