CALVERT COUNTY, Md. – On Wednesday this week, the Calvert County Board of Commissioners voted to formally establish the Student Safety and Well-Being Committee. This decision was made in response to a number of incidents that were reported by teachers and students at Calvert High School.
This committee consisting of 19 members will have the responsibility of making recommendations on enhancing, โthe learning environment and improve school culture and climate by considering the latest school safety best practices and make recommendations that position the Countyโs learning environments to be ahead of new threats, concerns and safety mandates.โ
โThere are incidents in our public schools that elicit fear and concern from parents, students, teachers, our school support staff and our school administrators,โ said Linda Turner, deputy county administrator.
Turner presented the resolution at the special meeting on May 29th, which was organized in response to a power outage that occurred last week on the 21st, which caused the meeting that day to end early.
The resolution states that the committee will have 15 voting members, one of which would be appointed by the commissioners to serve as the chair.
All three election districts will be represented by two members each, who have experience as a school service worker or as a parent of a former or current student.
The members will also include representation from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, Board of County Commissioners, the County Health Department, and Calvert County Public Schools.
One member will also be recommended by the Maryland School for Safety Team or Advisory Board.
The non-voting members of the committee will include the Deputy County Administrator, the Director of Community Resources, the Director of Communications and Media Relations, and the Superintendent of Calvert County Public Schools.
The committee will be briefed by students and community members regarding school safety issues.
