Patricia Hoover of Huntingtown describes her 9-year-old daughter, Lauren, as โ€œan animal activist in training.โ€ The proud owner of a guinea pigย  named Seamour, Lauren professes a love for all animals, โ€œespecially horses.โ€

Lauren recently read a story entitled โ€œOwl in the Office,โ€ which is part of a collection of tales written by Ben M. Bagio called โ€œAnimal Ark.โ€

According to Lauren, โ€œOwl in the Officeโ€ is a story about a woman who runs an animal sanctuary on property she rents. When she and the animals, face eviction due to lack of funds to pay the rent, two children help her out by holding a pet show.

It got Lauren to thinking, and with her familyโ€™s backing, the young, budding animal activist is hosting a pet show Saturday, June 2 at her home on Holland Cliff Road.

โ€œShe decided to benefit two animal causes and came up with the idea to have a pet show to raise money,โ€ said Patricia.

โ€œI wanted to do the pet show to raise money for the Calvert Animal Welfare League [CAWL] Rescue Center and Donkey Sanctuary in England,โ€ Lauren stated, adding she learned about the British sanctuary by playing a computer game called โ€œMy Donkey and Me.โ€

โ€œBoth organizations would probably need money at some point,โ€ said Lauren.

Patricia Hoover confirmed that she has notified both organizations about Laurenโ€™s fundraiser but had not received a response as this story was being posted.

The pet show will be held starting at 1 p.m. and the cost for pet owners is $2 per contest. Those contests are:

The dog with the tail that wags the most (or fastest)

The most obedient dog

The rodent with the twitchiest nose
