โEighthย Annual Museum Day Features Free GENERAL ADMISSION on September 29, 2012โ
On Saturday, September 29, 2012, the Calvert Marine Museum will participate in โMuseum Day,โ presented by Smithsonian magazine. Museum Day is a day when museums and cultural institutions nationwide open their doors free of charge to Smithsonian magazine readers and Smithsonian.com visitors. Celebrating culture, learning and knowledge, Museum Day reflects the spirit of the magazine, and emulates the free-admission policy of the Smithsonian Institutionโs Washington, DC-based facilities.
Visit www.smithsonian.com/museumday to download your Museum Day Admission Card. ย Attendees must present the Museum Day Admission Card to gain free entry to participating institutions. Each card provides museum access for two people, and one admission card is permitted per household, per email address.ย Listings and links to participating museumsโ can also be found at www.smithsonian.com/museumday.ย ย
Last year, approximately 350,000 people attended Museum Day, with all 50 states plus Puerto Rico represented by over 1,400 participating museums. Doug Alves, Director of the Calvert Marine Museum said, โWe are pleased to again be part of this national event to promote the heritage and culture of our many wonderful museums. Hopefully, this will encourage folks who have never visited Solomons to take the time to see all the exciting and educational programs we have to offer.โ
The Calvert Marine Museum is open daily from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Visitors can experience a variety of exhibits in the museum 31,000 square foot exhibition hall, as well as tours of the Drum Point Lighthouse.ย For children and the young at heart, spend some time in the museumโs Discovery Room where all of the museumโs themes culminate into a state-of-the-art, hands on learning center.ย The museumโs river otters, Bubbles and Squeak, will greet visitors until 4:00 p.m.ย In addition, visitors can enjoy a Patuxent River cruise aboard the Wm. B. Tennison at 2:00 p.m.; tickets are sold on a first-come first-served basis, and go on sale when the museum opens at 10:00 a.m.
