DUNKIRK, Md. — Dunkirk District Park will soon be home to the first-ever Calvert Public Art Initiative project. Officials will unveil student-designed art banners at the skate park at a special event on June 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. The rain date for the event is Thursday, June 26.
The banners will be added along the back fence line of the skate park, along with an attribution panel for the students, teachers and organizations who worked on the project. The banners were created this past school year by students and teachers, sponsored by a grant from the Arts Council of Calvert County.
In addition to open skate time, the event will feature family-friendly activities that focus on promoting creativity and community. A chalk-art station, temporary tattoos and a selfie photo booth are just some of the fun and expressive experiences available at the event.
The Calvert Public Art Initiative is a new joint project between the Arts Council of Calvert County, Calvert County Public Schools, and Calvert County Parks and Recreation. The Arts Council maintains a calendar of art-based events in the county. It’s funded by the Maryland State Arts Council and by the Calvert County government. The council partners with numerous community organizations, local businesses and nonprofits to support art and artists in the county.
The council’s core values are to make the arts accessible to all, to support artists in every stage of their journey, to give respect to all creative endeavors and to highlight the benefits of the arts in Calvert County. Interested artists and supporters can view upcoming projects on their website to learn how to get involved or to volunteer with programs or events like the skate park celebration.
