PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) has awarded a contract totaling $1,570,335 to W.L. Gary Co., of Washington, D.C., for a partial HVAC replacement project.

Director of Construction Shuchita Warner said the funds will replace the perimeter units around the Human Resources and Finance section of the Brooks Administration Building, located at 1305 Dares Beach Road in Prince Frederick.

“They have a lot of issues with the system not working properly in the summer and the winter,” Warner said, adding that some of the issues stemmed from past attempts to bring heating and cooling into an old building. The updates will make the system more efficient and bring it up to code in the designated areas.

The current system also partially runs off the building’s boiler, which cannot sustain it long term.

The funds for this project will come from the approved capital improvement program budget and capital outlay.

Previously, the project included partial HVAC and window replacement for the building, but all bidders came back with amounts that exceeded the amounts permitted by the Code of Maryland Regulation (COMAR). After review, Warner’s team revised the project to remove the window replacement plans and asked qualified bidders to re-submit bids.

However, Warner explained to Calvert’s Board of Education that the building is in need of many more updates and repairs in the next budget conversation — the building needs an elevator and other updates to be ADA compliant, for example, in addition to numerous other repairs.
