 Prince Frederick, MD – A Calvert County man was sentenced Friday, July 7 to 25 years behind bars for sexually violating a female juvenile, court records stated. The defendant, David Anthony Meints, 35 of Lusby, pleaded guilty April 25 to one count each of second-degree sex offense, sex abuse of a minor and second-degree rape.

A Circuit Court judge sentenced Meints to 30 years on the second-degree sex charge. Half of that sentence was suspended. Meints was sentenced to five years for sex abuse of a minor and five years for second-degree rape. The sentences will run consecutively. Additionally, Meints will be on probation for five years once he is released. He must register as a Tier 3 sex offender and will be subject to sex offender supervision for the rest of his life.

Meints was indicted on 27 counts in January, one month after turning himself in to Calvert County authorities. According to court documents, the victim told Calvert County Sheriff’s Office investigators that Meints had been “raping her for over 12 months.”

Meints was represented in court by attorney Mark W. Carmean. The case was prosecuted by Calvert County Deputy State’s Attorney Kathryn Marsh.


Update Jan. 20 1:15 p.m. 

Lusby, MD— A local grand jury handed down a 27-count indictment Jan. 18 against a Calvert County man accused a sexually violating a female juvenile, documents on file in the Maryland court system stated.

The defendant, identified as David Anthony Meints, 35 of Lusby; turned himself into authorities Dec. 22, a few days after the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office began its investigation of the alleged offenses.

In the indictment, Meints faces 10 counts of sex abuse of a minor, six counts each of second-degree and third-degree sex offense, four counts of second-degree rape and a single count of sex abuse of a minor, continuing course of action. All of the charges Meints faces are felonies.

According to court documents, Meints’ accuser told detectives that the defendant had been “raping” her “for over twelve months.” Meints remains incarcerated at the Calvert County Detention Center. Following his arrest, court records indicated Meints was being represented by the local Public Defenders’ office.

Meints initial appearance in Calvert County Circuit Court related to the indictment is tentatively scheduled for Monday, Jan. 23 before Judge Marjorie Clagett. A jury trial on the charges is tentatively scheduled for late May.

Lusby, MD – A Calvert County man is facing charges of second-degree rape and third-degree sex offense after the victim—a female teen—reported the alleged violations to police. According to documents on file in District Court, the suspect—identified as David Anthony Meints, 35 of Lusby turned himself into county authorities Dec. 22.

According to the statement of charges filed by Detective William Rector of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, the victim contacted authorities Dec. 20, detailing an encounter with the accused that allegedly occurred the previous day. Deputies were dispatched to the location of the alleged sexual encounter. Gaining entry with a search warrant, the deputies gathered evidence, seizing several items including various articles of clothing, bedding and a cellular device. Police also obtained DNA samples from the defendant.

After meeting with police, the victim was transported by Detective Meghan Quinn to Calvert Memorial Hospital for a sexual assault forensic exam. The victim told detectives that Meints had been “‘raping’ her for over 12 months,” according to the statement of charges. Meints has been ordered by authorities to have no contact with the victim.

Rector noted in the charging documents that Meints “made a spontaneous utterance to me in my unmarked police vehicle.” According to Rector, Meints, who had invoked his right of attorney services upon arriving at the sheriff’s office, stated, “this is not something that you recover from. I appreciate the respect you are showing me but this is bad, very bad.”

In addition to second-degree rape and third-degree sex offense, Meints has been charged with second-degree assault and sex abuse of a minor. If convicted on all charges Meints could face 65 years in jail and $2,500 in fines. According to court records he is currently in jail and a hearing on the charges is tentatively scheduled for Jan. 20 at 1 p.m. Meints is being represented by a public defender.
