Prince Frederick, MD – Camp Phoenix is three-day, day camp for grieving children and teens ages 7 to 15. Camp was held on July 8, 9, & 10 at Kings Landing Park in Huntingtown. This year 19 children attended camp and enjoyed swimming, crafts, sports, and other traditional camp activities as well as support group discussions, various activities to help them deal with the feelings and emotions that come with a loss, and a balloon release in memory of their loved one.

Each camper was matched with an adult “Buddy” who spent the three days with them, providing support and friendship. The buddies often find the time just as rewarding and beneficial as the children do. New camp volunteer Dawn Absher shared, “I just put my shirt on that some kids signed and looked at the back for the first time. My buddy wrote her name and “Thank You!” underneath. I got a little choked up when I saw it. I am pretty sure I’ll be back next year.”

Calvert Hospice is always looking for volunteers to be camp buddies, work with other bereavement programs, sit with patients, help in our office, or serve at special events.
