LEONARDTOWN, Md. — Deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office recovered a card skimming device on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at the Family Dollar on Merchants Lane, prompting a warning for shoppers to monitor their financial accounts.
Investigators said the device, known as an overlay skimmer, had been attached over a legitimate card reader and was designed to capture customers’ payment information without detection. The skimmer was made to closely resemble the store’s standard point-of-sale terminal, making it difficult for customers to notice.
Deputies removed the device and opened an investigation to determine when it was installed and how many customers may have been affected. Anyone who made purchases at the Leonardtown Family Dollar around the time of the discovery is urged to review bank and credit card statements for unauthorized transactions.
Officials also reminded the public to inspect payment terminals before use—gently tugging on card readers or keypads to ensure they are secure and not tampered with.
Anyone who finds suspicious devices or believes their information has been compromised should contact the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office at 301-475-8008.

People that steal from other people, especially these groups that use skimmers, should be found and given the death sentence.
