Competitors and fans gathered at Veraโ€™s Beach Club in White Sands on Saturday for the 1st annual Cardboard Boat Race and Battle of St. Leonardโ€™s Creek. The event started with eight homemade cardboard โ€œboatsโ€ that attempted to race a 200-yard circuit through the creek with some completing the race and others not getting very far off the shore line.

The other event of the day was another race of sorts where self-decorated row boats battled each other with water guns and balloons while racing to get a flag and return with it.

The event was sponsored by the Maryland Power Boat Club and all proceeds were donated to the Chopticon High School marching band to help fund a trip to Hawaii for a performance.
