U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara A. Mikulski (both D-MD) today announced that St. Maryโ€™s County has received a $70,702 Federal Aviation Administration grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DoT) to acquire land to extend a runway.ย ย 

โ€œThis grant ensures that St. Maryโ€™s County Regional Airport continues to be a safe, dependable, and efficient airport for the traveling public,โ€ said Senator Cardin.ย  โ€œThis runway extension will help St. Maryโ€™s Airport meet federal safety standards and will help improve service at the airport.โ€ย ย 

โ€œOur regional airports play a key role in maintaining Marylandโ€™s robust economy,โ€ Senator Mikulski said. โ€œExtending the runway at St. Maryโ€™s Regional Airport is critical to maintaining safety and efficiency at this busy airport while keeping Marylanders on the go.โ€

The grant will allow the airport, which is operated by the St. Mary’s County Board of County Commissioners, to buy more land to extend the approach for runway 29. St. Maryโ€™s County Regional Airport is located near the Patuxent River Naval Air Station.ย  The Airport also has a helipad, which is used by the Maryland State Police.ย ย
