Participants in the 26th annual Chaptico Classic had a lot of incentive to finish this year’s race as quickly as possible. The heavy rains and high winds of Hurricane Irene were St. Mary’s County-bound when the region’s celebrated road race began at the boom of a cannon.
At 8:01 a.m. the race—a five kilometer trek for runners and walkers and 10 kilometers for those runners who wanted to double their endurance—got underway. Several hundred participants were greeted by U.S. House of Representatives Minority Whip Steny H. Hoyer [D-Maryland District 5], along with state delegates John F. Wood Jr. [D-District 29A] and John L. Bohanan Jr. [D-District 29B] prior to the race.
Retired Olympic runner Lynn Jennings was the featured speaker at the post-race ceremony.
Proceeds from the Chaptico Classic will benefit Three Oaks Shelter, St. Mary’s Caring Soup Kitchen, Southern Maryland Community Network and the Mary Lou Gough Food Pantry.
