The Board of Education honored six students on Tuesday, May 10, for their accomplishments in academic achievement, career readiness and personal responsibility, which are the focus areas of the school system’s master plan.
Honored were Ashley Eastburn, fifth grade, T.C. Martin Elementary School; Katelyn Kluh, fifth grade, Walter J. Mitchell Elementary School; Leilani Mason, fifth grade, Mary B. Neal Elementary School; Teghan Simonton, eighth grade, Matthew Henson Middle School; Crystal Simmons, eighth grade, Mattawoman Middle School; and Aaron Kauffman, twelfth grade, North Point High School.

Eastburn was honored in the area of academic achievement.ย  She produces high quality work in all subject areas as seen by her honor roll status quarterly.ย  Eastburn maintains a positive attitude toward school and has a genuine enthusiasm for learning new material.ย  She is an excellent role model for her peers, academically and socially.

Kluh was honored in the area of academic achievement.ย  She has been on the Principalsโ€™ Honor Roll every quarter.ย  Kluh participated in All-County Chorus and the SMECO Knowledge Bowl.ย  She is a member of MESA, Just Say No Club, Math team and Destination Imagination.

Mason was honored in the area of academic achievement.ย  She has earned straight Aโ€™s for the last three years.ย  Mason is a member of the schoolโ€™s orchestra and MESA team.ย  She consistently shows character as well as her academic strengths and is a gifted math and reading student.

Simonton was honored in the area of career readiness.ย  She has been enrolled in the schoolโ€™s academic Scholars Program and been on the Principalsโ€™ Honor Roll since 6th grade.ย  Simonton is a member of the Lego Robotics Club, Newspaper Club and cross country.ย  She possesses a strong work ethic and outgoing personality that will continue to adequately prepare her for success.

Simmons was honored in the area of career readiness.ย  She has been an active member of Mattawomanโ€™s Student Council for three years and is currently the Student Council President.ย  Simmons exemplifies the qualities of a leader both in and out of the classroom.ย  She attends County CCASC Meetings, involves herself in leadership workshops such as the Maryland Leadership Workshop and Annual Student Council Convention, attends legislative sessions and participated in the Walk to End Homelessness in Charles County.

Kauffman was honored in the area of personal responsibility.ย  He excels in his Honors and Advanced Placement classes with a GPA of 4.27 while continuing his outstanding level of citizenship in the classroom.ย  Kauffman has been the class of 2011โ€™s Vice President for the last four years, is an active member of Thespians, National Art Society and tennis team and continues to volunteer for various charitable organizations.ย  He plans on attending the University of Maryland Baltimore County in the fall.
