La Plata, MD – It was just about awesome for kids attending the Charles County Board of Educationโ€™s monthly meeting on Valentineโ€™s Day in La Plata. Children from all over the county were participating in Job Shadow Day with Charles County Public Schools and every member of the BOE had a junior member beside them.

And that was pretty cool, because when Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kim Hill stood up to give her presentation, Amanda Cartwright of C. Paul Barnhardt Elementary School and a host of others, got to see what their public school system has achieved firsthand.charles county public schools

Hill proudly announced that Charles County has achieved a graduation rate above 92 percent, a milestone for the system. โ€œThat places us among the top 25 percentage statewide,โ€ Hill noted. โ€œAt more than 92 percent, we have achieved a graduation rate above 87.6 percent, which is the state average.โ€

Also honored Feb. 14 were six Charles County Public School students for excellence and accomplishments in areas of academic achievement, career readiness and personal responsibility.

The honorees included Catherine Smith, fifth-grade student, Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer Elementary; Thomas Nguyen, fifth-grade student, Arthur Middleton Elementary; Maya Cauley, fifth-grade student, Dr. Samuel A. Mudd Elementary School; Aaliyah Jamison, fifth-grade student, William B. Wade Elementary School; Katarina Lile, eighth-grade student at Matthew Henson Middle School; and Tabitha Thorne, senior, Robert D. Stethem Educational Center.

The board honors several students monthly for their accomplishments in academic achievement, career readiness and personal responsibility, which are the focus areas of the school systemโ€™s master plan.
