WALDORF, Md. — Let’s have real talk about smoking, vaping and student safety. On World No Tobacco Day, observed annually on May 31, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office will host a free “Making Good Choices” workshop for parents and students from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Waldorf Senior Recreational Center, located at 90 Post Office Road.

The event will feature a candid conversation with law enforcement about the health and legal risks associated with smoking and vaping. The workshop includes a live “show and tell” presentation on the latest vaping and smoking devices youth are exposed to, along with practical strategies to help students stay safe at school and in the community.

The timing of the event on World No Tobacco Day aligns with global efforts to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use and the tactics industries use to market these products to young people.

Topics will include the health impacts of nicotine on adolescent development, how vaping devices are disguised and how schools and law enforcement are collaborating to reduce incidents on campus.

The “Making Good Choices” workshop is part of a broader educational initiative led by Beyond the Classroom and the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, with partial funding from the Charles County Department of Health.

The event is free, but registration is required by May 25 at https://makegoodchoices2025.eventbrite.com.
