
PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. – Maryland Capitol Police Chief Mike Wilson officially filed his candidacy for Office of the Sheriff in Calvert County for the 2022 elections.
“I believe after devotedly performing the duties as Chief of the Maryland Capitol Police and working with leaders in Maryland to reorganize, restructure and grow the department to where it stands today, it is my time to apply my passion for public service closer to home and I am excited to officially file to run for Sheriff of Calvert County,” said Wilson.
Wilson has been a resident of Calvert County since 1988 when he first became a Maryland State Trooper and was assigned to the Prince Frederick State Police barrack.
Prior to becoming a Maryland State Trooper, he served his country in the United States Air Force before he was honorably discharged. Through the past thirty-five years he has dedicated his life to public service and has gained the experience and necessary skills to become an affective law enforcement community leader.
Wilson graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a Masters Degree in
Organizational Leadership and a Bachelors Degree in Business Management. He lives with his wife Nancy in Huntingtown, Maryland and together, they share four children and nine grandchildren.
There are over 92,000 citizens in Calvert County. Calvert is a growing community that needs effective leaders. The Sheriff must be competent, transparent and possess the necessary skills to lead the department. The Sheriff is the lead law enforcement officer in the county and has many duties and responsibilities, to include:
• Protect the life and property of the citizens of Calvert County
• Safeguard each and every citizen in a fair and impartial manner, keeping them free from fear of criminal activities
• Uphold the United States Constitution
• Uphold the Constitution of Maryland
• Managing the Calvert County Detention Center
• Providing security to the courts
• Serve warrants, civil process, etc.
If elected to serve the community, Chief Mike Wilson is committed to upholding these responsibilities and duties.
(Retired) Captain Peter Spaulding, Commander of the Administrative Hearing Section, Maryland State Police, will serve as Campaign Chairman of the Committee to Elect Mike Wilson for Sheriff. Spaulding will also serve as Wilson’s Lieutenant Colonel should he be elected Sheriff.
“I have the integrity, honesty and leadership experience to effectively lead the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office and I would be honored to represent you, the citizens of Calvert County, as your Sheriff. Given the opportunity, I commit to ensuring community leadership, integrity and transparency will be the foundations from which I will lead,” said Wilson.

Chief of Police:
Mike Wilson was appointed Chief of Police for the Department of General Services, Maryland Capitol Police in 2011. The Maryland Capitol Police is a full service police department with 209 officers, which provide law enforcement and security services for state owned or leased facilities throughout the state of Maryland. He is responsible for managing a $23 million dollar budget and is directly supervised by one of the governor’s cabinet secretaries, the Secretary of the Department of General Services.
Maryland Capitol Police is responsible for the enforcement of criminal and traffic laws and securing facilities at the Annapolis Complex, to include the Maryland State Capitol, Governor’s Mansion, and House and Senate Buildings. Maryland Capitol Police are in charge of approving and organizing rallies and demonstrations that occur in Annapolis during the Legislative Session. Maryland Capitol Police is also tasked with operating and controlling one of the largest state identification card programs in Maryland.
Maryland State Police:
Prior to becoming Chief of Police with the Maryland Capitol Police Department, Chief Wilson was accepted into the Maryland State Police Academy in 1988. He was a Sergeant with the Maryland State Police and performed many different job functions while working throughout the state of Maryland. His tenure with the Maryland State Police enabled him to become proficient in many aspects of law enforcement to include: criminal investigation, traffic enforcement, patrol, Governor’s Executive Protection details, various computer crime investigations, critical infrastructure protection, “Sergeant of Arms” in the Maryland State Senate, Commander of the Legislative Security Section as well as other management and leadership roles within the Department. He served the citizens of Maryland in a law enforcement capacity and retired after 23 years of dedicated service to the citizens of the state of Maryland.
United States Air Force:
Prior to a successful career with the Maryland State Police, Chief Wilson served his country in the United States Military. He served four years in the United States Air Force as a Military Police Officer and Security Specialist. He received training in special weapons tactics, law enforcement functions, security issues, security clearance investigations, nuclear weapon convoys and warfare tactics. He was awarded the “Air Force Good Conduct Medal” and “Air Force Achievement Medal,” for meritorious service. He was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force in 1988.
Education:
While serving as Chief of the Maryland Capitol Police, Wilson made the decision to continue his education; thus, giving him the ability to become a more effective leader in the law enforcement community. Chief Wilson graduated from Johns Hopkin’s University, Police Executive Leadership Program, in May 2015, and received his bachelor’s degree in Business Management. In May 2016 he received his master’s degree from Johns Hopkin’s University in Organizational Leadership. Chief Wilson has over 35 years of law enforcement experience. The past 15 years have been in leadership positions, which has enabled him to become an effective and experienced leader in law enforcement.
