Rockville, MD – The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) announced Monday, Feb. 26 that it will be holding a public meeting Monday, March 12 at their Headquarters in Rockville regarding Exelon’s plans to submit a license amendment request to the commission regarding a proposed move of the Calvert Cliffs Emergency Operations Facility (EOF) and Technical Support Center (TSC). The Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant is located in Lusby.
According to NRC spokesman Neil Sheehan, the session will be a pre-submittal meeting and a chance for the company to gain a better understanding of NRC requirements and expectations in this area prior to submitting the request. The presidentially appointed Commission that oversees the NRC would need to approve such changes.
Sheehan told TheBayNet.com that areas the NRC reviews when considering an application for a consolidated EOF include “whether the facility would have adequate space for members of a NRC site team and federal, state and local responders during an emergency involving one or more of the nuclear power plants supported by the EOF; whether there is additional space for conducting briefings with emergency response personnel, communication capabilities with other company and off-site emergency response facilities, the capability to support response to events occurring simultaneously at more than one nuclear power reactor site if the emergency operations facility serves more than one site, the capability for obtaining and displaying plant data and radiological information for each reactor at a nuclear power reactor site and for each nuclear power reactor site that the facility serves, and access to copying equipment and office supplies.
According to the NRC, the public is invited to observe this meeting and will have one or more opportunities to communicate with the NRC after the business portion of the meeting but before the meeting is adjourned. I
