Roselle, IL – “Lord of the Rings” fans are familiar with trees that can walk and talk, but trees that drive around are even weirder.

The Roselle Police Department in Illinois had to deal with a tree on wheels when an officer spotted a Lincoln cruising down the road with all 15 feet (about 4.5 meters) of a fully branched-out tree wedged into the front grille.

The car’s airbags had deployed, but it didn’t stop the driver from trundling off down the road as though nothing had happened. The driver was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the police department. As far as cautionary tales go, it’s a strange one.

The incident happened several weeks ago, but the police just shared the story last week. The Roselle Police Department only recently decided to use its Facebook page to stay in touch with the community and had to contend with disbelievers commenting on the tree-in-car post.

On Monday, the Roselle Police Department posted proof in the form of a video showing the response in progress. It shows the tree traveling along in the opposite lane from the responding officer and then the car getting pulled over. The office approaches carefully and speaks to the driver. The video ends with this missive: “Don’t drink and drive.”

The photos of the car look unreal. The tree is completely intact except for the roots. The car managed to sheer it off low on the trunk. It protrudes at a slight forward angle. It’s surreal that the Lincoln was at all operable after such an impact.

This isn’t the first odd incident related to suspected drunk driving. Late in 2015, a woman live streamed herself while driving and declared herself drunk during the process. The police tracked her down. In 2013, a driver was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide after posting a YouTube confession.
