LA PLATA, Md. — Lithium-ion batteries on a workbench sparked a commercial building fire Monday night in La Plata, sending one person to a hospital with non-life-threatening symptoms.

Firefighters were dispatched shortly after 9 p.m. July 13 to the 4000 block of Ray Drive following reports of flames coming through the roof of a commercial structure.

Crews arrived to find fire in the rear section of the building and stretched an attack line inside. The flames were knocked down within approximately five minutes of firefighters’ arrival.

Bryans Road Volunteer Fire Department responded with Engine 112, Engine Tanker 11 and several command officers. Additional fire and emergency personnel assisted at the scene.

Fire officials determined that lithium-ion batteries on a workbench caused the fire. The batteries were secured by the Charles County Department of Emergency Services hazardous materials team.

A firefighter sustained a leg injury while operating at the scene, but available information does not indicate that the firefighter was transported.

A 70-year-old man experiencing lightheadedness was taken by ambulance to University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening symptoms.

Crews remained at the property for approximately two hours to complete overhaul, check for hidden fire and secure the scene.

Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department personnel provided coverage for the Bryans Road area and responded to three additional calls while crews operated at the fire.
