CLARIFICATION OF NAME OF SCHOOL from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office: The correct name of the school that will be added to the speed camera rotation sites is Grace Christian Academy of Maryland, not Grace Brethren School. The location is the same.

Effective Monday, November 3, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office Automated Speed Enforcement Unit will be adding Grace Christian Academy of Maryland in Waldorf to the list of school zones in which automated speed enforcement cameras can be activated. The camera will be on the northbound side of Route 5 in front of the school near Billingsley Road.

In addition, the cameras for Thomas Stone High School and General Smallwood Middle School (which were already approved sites) will be put back into rotation. The camera for Thomas Stone High School is near the 3700 block of Leonardtown Road (northbound and southbound). The camera for General Smallwood Middle School is located near the 4900 block of Indian Head Highway (northbound and southbound). All speed enforcement cameras are placed inside school zones which are identified with signage that the speed limit is photo enforced. 

The CCSO has a total of three mobile cameras which are generally rotated on a weekly basis among the following approved school zones: Berry Elementary School, Dr. James Craik Elementary School, Grace Christian Academy of Maryland, Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer Elementary School, Malcolm Elementary School, Maurice J. McDonough High School, General Smallwood Middle School, Thomas Stone High School, William B. Wade Elementary School, and Westlake High School.

As a courtesy, the locations of the cameras are posted weekly on the sheriff’s office Facebook page. Also:  

  • Cameras are activated Monday through Friday, all year long, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. with the exception of Wade Elementary School which operates from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. 
  • Citations are issued to the registered owner of the vehicle and only if the speed was 12 mph or more over the posted speed limit.
  • A school zone speed camera violation is a $40 fine with no points.
