Five Charles County Public Schools students advance to the National History Day Contest in June as first- and second-place winners at the state level competition, held April 24 at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.
Andre Burton, a freshman at La Plata High School, won first place in the senior division documentary category for his project titled, โProsthetic Innovation: War Changes Everything.โ He also received a special prize award in the senior division, military history category.
Brittany Schulz and Katherine Snee, eighth graders at Piccowaxen Middle School, won first place in the junior group exhibit category for their project titled, โKodak on a Roll.โ
Salma Ansari, seventh grader at Mattawoman Middle School, and Suha Ansari, sixth grader at Mattawoman, won second place in the junior group exhibit category for their project titled, โOrgan Transplants: The Gift of Lifetime.โย
These students will participate in the National History day contest, scheduled for June 13-17 at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Additionally, two other county students received special awards. Shanay Miles, a Westlake High School senior, received the Mary Douglas Glasspool Special Award for Religious Freedom in the senior division for her project titled, โThe King James Bible.โ
Matthew Kamin, a seventh grader at Piccowaxen, received a special prize award in the History of Science and Technology in the junior division for her project titled, โThis Innovation is Ironclad.โ
Jennifer Miller, a history teacher at General Smallwood Middle School, was also named the 2010 History Day Teacher of the Year for Charles County at the Maryland State History Day event held April 24 at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.
More than 25 other CCPS students competed in the state event after receiving a first- or second-place award at the county level.
