In a game that featured a 54 minute rain delay, the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs outlasted the Camden Riversharks 6-5 in the opening game of their three-game series at Campbell’s Field.

Daryl Thompson (5-6) tossed five innings of one-run baseball for the win while Fu-Te Ni (2-5) came out on the losing end giving up four earned runs in 5.1 innings pitched. Justin Berg got through a perfect 9th inning for his 5th save of the season.

C.J. Ziegler put the Blue Crabs in front in the top of the 2nd inning with a sacrifice fly that scored Steve Moss. They held that lead until the bottom of the 5th when Brandon Chaves singled in Eric Perez to tie the game.

The big inning for Southern Maryland was the 6th. Cyle Hankerd doubled home a run to retake the lead and Steve Moss followed with an RBI double of his own. Later in the frame, James Skelton hit a two-out, two-run single to make it 5-1 Blue Crabs.

Jake Opitz drove in the eventual game-winning run with an RBI triple in the 7th. It was needed after a four-run bottom of the 7th by Camden. Chaves hit a two-run home run off Brian Grening and two batters later Brian Pounds hit a two-run home run of his own to bring the River Sharks within a run at 6-5.

The Blue Crabs continue their three-game series with the Camden Riversharks starting tomorrow night at 7:00 PM. Southern Maryland returns home for three games against the Bridgeport Bluefish beginning Friday September 5 at 7: 05 PM. Purchase tickets for the game by visiting or calling 301-638-9788.
