INDIAN HEAD, Md. — The best parks aren’t always the biggest. Sometimes they’re the ones you discover by chance, like Pisgah Park.
Hidden just off Masons Springs Road, the park combines a walking trail, playground, athletic fields, outdoor fitness stations and plenty of open green space. It’s the kind of place where a quick walk can turn into an afternoon outdoors.
Located at 6645 Mason Springs Road in Indian Head, Pisgah Park is free to the public and open daily from 8 a.m. until dusk.
Families come for the playground. Walkers make laps around the paved trail. Children stop to explore the themed play areas tucked along the path, while others spread out under the pavilion for lunch or head to the athletic fields for a game.
It’s a park that’s easy to overlook until you spend an afternoon there.

Something For Every Visit
One of the first things you’ll notice is how everything connects. A 0.75-mile paved walking and fitness trail loops through the property, linking many of its amenities instead of separating them.
As visitors make their way around the trail, they’ll pass athletic fields, outdoor fitness stations, open green spaces and themed play pockets where children can stop, climb and explore. The trail is open to walkers, joggers, cyclists and leashed dogs, making it one of the park’s most popular features.
The playground gives younger visitors a place to burn off energy, while adults can relax on nearby benches or continue around the walking trail. Softball and athletic fields host league games throughout the year, with one softball field available for drop-in games when it’s not reserved.
Dog owners can also take advantage of the fenced dog arena, where four-legged visitors have room to run and play off leash.

A Place To Stay A While
Pisgah Park isn’t a place where visitors rush in and out.
Benches along the trail offer places to stop and rest, while the pavilion provides a spot for lunch, birthday parties or family gatherings. Restrooms and water fountains make it easy to spend several hours at the park, whether you’re getting in a workout, watching a game or enjoying a picnic.
There’s no right way to spend the day at Pisgah Park, and that’s part of what makes it worth the visit.

A Hidden Gem Worth Discovering
Charles County is home to dozens of parks, but Pisgah Park quietly brings together recreation, fitness and family-friendly amenities in one place. Visitors can walk the trail, take advantage of the free-to-use exercise equipment, let children explore the playground, enjoy a game on the athletic fields or give their dogs room to run.
Sometimes the best places to spend a day outdoors aren’t the ones with the biggest crowds. They’re the places you’ve driven by countless times without realizing everything they have to offer.
