Dominion Cove Point has announced construction at two intersections near its liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Lusby will begin as early as April 7.ย According to a company press release, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) recently approved these projectsโinstallation of a traffic signal at the intersection of Route 2/4 and Cove Point Road, adding a right-turn lane and extending the existing left-turn lane on Route 2/4 southbound at the Cove Point Road intersection, widening Cove Point Road at the intersection with Route 2/4 to create four lanes, including westbound lanes that go left only, straight only and right only; and adding a right-turn lane on Cove Point Road eastbound at the intersection with Little Cove Point Road.
The work is expected to take two to three months to complete, Dominion officials stated.
There will also be work done in the area for underground utilities, and extending county water and sewer pipelines to Dominion Cove Point.
Dominion officials indicated in the press release that the road projects will be done and are not subject to any federal or state oversight related to the possible expansion of the gas plant.
Dominionโs plan to expand Cove Point LNG Plant for the purpose of exporting natural gas is currently under review by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) and several other entities.
Those opposed to the expansion project continue to express their feelings to the federal and state agencies. On Tuesday, April 1, the Chesapeake Sustainable Business Council stated 50 Maryland businesses have expressed their opposition to the plan in a joint letter to the PSC. The group stated the project is “bad for the economy” and “will only exacerbate the climate crisis.”
None of the four businesses highlighted in a press release about the letter or any of the businesses that have their names on the letter are located in Calvert County or Southern Maryland.
