On Dec. 4, at approximately 10:03 p.m., Trooper B. Sorenson responded to a 911 simulcast about a subject slumped over the steering wheel of his vehicle while at a traffic light. TFC J. Edelen was on routine patrol southbound Route 301 at Route 228 when he observed the vehicle.
TFC Edelen attempted to make contact with the driver Robert Martin Washington III, 28 years of Waldorf, when the driver accelerated the vehicle running the red light. TFC Edelen then activated his lights and sirens. Washington failed to stop until he was boxed in at the Chipotle Restaurant.
Washington was charged with driving under the influence, possession of marijuana and paraphernalia.
